Daca ar fi sa ma gandesc la o piesa Genesis, prima care mi-ar fi in gand (nu, nu e I Can’t Dance) ar fi The Musical Box.

Piesa poate fi ascultata pe albumul Nursery Crime, lansat in 1971, in componenta care a si consacrat trupa: Peter Gabriel (voce, flaut), Tony Banks (chitara, keyboard), Mike Rutherford (bass, voce), Phil Collins (tobe, voce), and Steve Hackett (chitara solo). In aceasta componenta, Genesis a lansat cele mai bune albume ale trupei: Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. In ‘75 Peter Gabriel paraseste Genesis si alege o cariera solo.

Sa revin. Piesa de-un rock progresive evident spune o poveste in stil victorian ce abordeaza subiectul mortii, al reincarnarii si al dorintei trupesti. Dar la ce poti sa te astepti din partea unui Genesis strunit de Peter Gabriel? Noroc ca se inventase eticheta “progressive rock” ca in felul asta aveau si cei de la Genesis un loc de care sa apartina ei si muzico-razneala lor.

In detaliu povestea piesei se gaseste chiar pe interiorul copertii (destul de edificatoare si imaginea aleasa pt coperta de fapt) albumului si zice cam asa:

While Henry Hamilton-Smythe minor (8 years old) was playing croquet with Cynthia Jane De Blaise-William (9 years), sweet-smiling Cynthia raised hermallet high and gracefully removed Henry’s head. Two weeks later,
in Henry’s nursery, she discovered his treasured musical box. Eagerly she opened it and as “Old King Cole” began to play, a small spirit-figure appeared.

Henry had returned – but not for long, for as he stood in the room his body began ageing rapidly, leaving a child’s mind inside. A lifetime’s desires surged through him. Unfortunately the attempt to persuade Cynthia Jane to fulfill his romantic desire led his nurse to the nursery to investigate the noise. Instinctively Nanny hurled the musical box at the bearded child, destroying both.
